Magdalena Bay

Where it all began -
The concept for RED was born in Magdalena Bay, in an effort to link socio-economic development with conservation. Working with Julio Solís, leader of Magdalena Baykeeper, we sought to create sustainable tourism products out of the Grupo Tortuguero project in Magdalena. RED was born, and now incubates a cooperative of local men and women who provide conservation focused tourism products to travelers from around the world.

The conservation value goes beyond the sea turtle monitoring - Magdalena Bay is rampant with poaching of sea turtles and other species. Members of the cooperative working with RED who were at one point themselves poachers, are now some of the most staunch leaders of conservation in the region, working with local youth to create future stewards, and donating a portion of their proceeds to local conservation and community development initiatives.
