Early in 2010, RED was contacted by two young individuals from Punta Abreojos, a small fishing community within the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve. The cooperative had sponsored the two to pursue their university studies in La Paz. Juan held a degree in Fisheries Science, and Teresa was finishing her studies of Alternative Tourism. They presented RED with their vision to return to Punta Abreojos and apply what they had learned towards a sustainable future in their community.
Since then, RED has mentored Juan and Tere in a business planning process to form an Ecotourism Division within the Abreojos Cooperative. The plan includes sustainable use and conservation of the Estero Coyote, a rich estuarine system teeming with aviary and marine life. RED is continuing its support of this project in the implementation phase, with a hope to see the vision of these two future leaders fully realized.
