Welcome to RED Sustainable Tourism
RED |sustainable tourism| is a network of community-based tour operators dedicated to providing world class Conservation Adventures along the Baja California peninsula. RED builds off over 15 years of conservation work in coastal communities to offer travelers unique experiences which link conservation and local culture to unique ecotourism experiences.
Imagine yourself racing offshore on small panga part searching for loggerhead sea turtles to catch and release... or camped out with researchers in a sea turtle data collection station... or sitting around a campfire singing songs with local fishermen/conservationists.
With RED, you're not just travelling, you are supporting vital conservation work and sustainable economic alternatives in communities throughout the Baja California Peninsula.
Why We Do What We Do: The Baja California peninsula provides a home to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes on the planet, as well as a staggering list of endangered species, marine mammals, and migratory birds. Unfortunately, overfishing and bycatch, poaching, and mega-development threaten the survival of species and critical habitat throughout the region.
RED believes that building healthy local communities is essential to preserving these natural environments. We know because we have over 15 years of conservation experience in the region. Several of our partner communities depend mainly upon small-scale fisheries, leaving them vulnerable to seasonality, and the disposition of markets and intermediaries. Women are often shut out from economic activity, and young adults lack career options and adequate training.
Families in these communities face constant economic uncertainty, and too often choose to sell their land to speculators and developers. Social problems abound. Conservationists have a moral obligation to develop ways for local residents to benefit economically from species and habitat protection programs. Through the strategies described above, RED is developing an economic option that creates synergy between communities and their natural resources, encouraging conservation over extraction, and long-term coexistence with the natural habitat that provides their sustenance.
