SCROLL · THE EXPERIENCE

Where the working coast meets cultural reinvention.

Todos Santos sits in the shadow of the cape mountains on the Pacific, 75 kilometers west of La Paz and a world apart from the resort circuit. Founded in the 18th century as a sugar-farming settlement, it declined through the 20th century until a convergence of independent artists, culinary practitioners, and conservation advocates anchored a cultural renaissance. In 2006, Mexico designated it a Pueblo Mágico — a recognition reserved for municipalities with a coherent cultural identity and living tradition.

Los Cerritos is the fishing beach just north of town — a pocket of sand with a consistent swell, a small fishing cooperative, and year-round waves that invite both visitors and local surfers. The beach is accessible but authentic: you encounter tourists and working boats in the same geography, and the pace is neither touristic nor rushed.

This experience is for travelers who want both ease and depth in a half-day to full-day frame. It pairs relaxation with narrative — culture and ecology, commerce and creativity, all within eyeshot of the same horizon.

The Framework

A day of crossing and arrival.

01

Departure from La Paz to the Pacific.

Morning pickup from your hotel lobby in La Paz. RED's naturalist guide and a vehicle depart eastbound, crossing the central cordillera of the peninsula via the transpeninsular highway. The drive is 90 minutes through mountains and semi-arid coastal vegetation — a geographic passage that separates the city from the working coast. You arrive at Los Cerritos beach mid-morning, where shade structures and beach gear await. Time on the sand is unstructured: swim, float, read, sleep in the shade, or if waves suit you, paddle into the gentle rollers on a body board. Optional: brief surf lesson with a local instructor, arranged on the day. The guide remains available to discuss the geology of the coast, the fishing settlement, or simply to observe the rhythm of the place.

08:00 Pickup from hotel in La Paz
09:30 Depart La Paz; cross the mountains
11:00 Arrive at Los Cerritos; set up shade and beach gear
11:30–14:00 Beach time; optional body board or surf lesson
02

Walking Todos Santos: history and art.

Leave the beach by mid-afternoon and drive into the town center. Your guide leads a walking tour of Todos Santos' key landmarks: the Hotel California, the restored sugar mill, galleries and artisan studios, the town market, and the waterfront. The narrative connects the original agricultural settlement to the contemporary creative community — architecture, commerce, conservation, and cultural identity as they coexist on the same streets. The guide speaks to both the working fishing families and the artist-residents who have chosen this place. Stops are flexible; the pace is conversational. A light meal (not included) is recommended at one of the town's restaurants or markets. The tour concludes by late afternoon, leaving time for a final moment on the waterfront or a visit to one of the smaller galleries before departure.

14:00 Leave Los Cerritos beach
14:15 Arrive in Todos Santos town center
14:30–17:00 Walking tour: landmarks, galleries, history, architecture
17:00 End of guided tour; free time in town or immediate departure
03

Return to La Paz before sunset.

Depart Todos Santos by early evening (or immediately after the walking tour) for the return drive to La Paz. The return follows the same transpeninsular route, arriving back at your hotel by sunset or early evening, allowing for onward travel or an evening out in the city. The full-day experience fits comfortably within a morning departure and evening return, with a two-hour buffer for flexibility.

17:00–17:30 Depart Todos Santos; return via mountains
18:30–19:00 Arrive La Paz; return to hotel

Naturalist Guide
RED · Ground and Cultural Interpreter

Fishing Community
Los Cerritos · Coastal Stewards

A working cooperative of fishers who maintain the Los Cerritos landing. The beach operates as a functional harbor and public space; travelers encounter the working rhythm of the coast rather than a curated tourism zone.

This experience works for travelers seeking ease with narrative.

Todos Santos & Los Cerritos is RED's most accessible day offering — no extreme fitness required, no specialized permits, and a balanced mix of relaxation and cultural learning. It suits families, creative professionals seeking a coastal break, designers scouting cultural geography, and institutions building a multi-day program that includes both work and leisure.

It is especially strong when combined with a second experience: Sierra de la Laguna (terrestrial) or Espíritu Santo (marine). A two-chapter itinerary gives travelers the contrast that deepens understanding of the peninsula.

Describe your traveler, the dates you are considering, and whether this experience stands alone or as part of a longer journey. We will respond within two working days with a proposal on timing, cost, and logistics.
