An immersive day exploring the marked nature trails of Espíritu Santo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to endemic marine, aviary and terrestrial species.
Espíritu Santo sits in the upper reaches of the Gulf of California — the Sea of Cortés. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2005, and it remains largely unmodified. The island is home to seven marked nature trails of varying difficulty and vertical gain, each designed for a different rhythm of discovery. Some rise steeply through canyons toward the water's edge; others thread coastal flats past endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else. The island's geology is exposed rhyolite, the pinks and reds of volcanic stone shaped by wind, salt spray, and minimal human intervention.
RED arranges your hike selection in advance based on your group's fitness and timing preferences. You may choose a single shorter trail or combine two in a day. Our bilingual naturalist guide interprets the island's natural history, helps identify endemic species, and moves at the group's pace. The day concludes with a snorkel in the crystalline waters and observation of the resident sea lion colony, followed by a return to La Paz by late afternoon.
Meet at Muelle Fiscal (the main dock in La Paz) at 9:00 a.m. Board a 27-foot fiberglass skiff equipped with full shade, seat cushions, dry storage, and a marine toilet. Your bilingual naturalist guide boards with the group and begins an on-water briefing during the ninety-minute transit to Espíritu Santo. Learn the island's geological, ecological, and cultural history before arrival. The guide will discuss endemic species, the island's protection status, and what to observe throughout the day's hike. Arrive at the island ready to begin your selected trail.
Hike one of seven marked trails tailored to your group's preferences and fitness. Choose from Cascada Seca at Playa Candelero (forty minutes, 0.5 miles, 100 feet of gain) for a light but scenic route, or Ensenada Grande (three hours, 2.1 miles, 524 feet) which rises through the canyon toward the water's edge with a spectacular view of the Gulf of California. Select any trail in between, or plan two different hikes for the same day. Your naturalist guide interprets the island's endemic plants and animals throughout, identifying species and explaining their ecological role. Pace is set by the group; rest stops are frequent. The guide carries water, electrolyte supplies, and a first aid kit.
Board the skiff for a snorkel session in the crystalline waters off the island. Your guide identifies marine species and points out the resident sea lion colony resting on nearby rocks. Snorkel time is typically forty-five minutes to one hour, depending on water conditions and group comfort. Return to the boat, rinse off, and depart for La Paz with the afternoon sun. Arrive back at Muelle Fiscal by late afternoon with time for evening plans in the city.
